"The Little Mermaid" review

Here's the first hit of the deceased Disney renaissance (1989-1999); and let me tell you what bothers me is this movie in this review.
First of all is complete butchering of the Hans Christian Andersen fairy tale.
In the original Little Mermaid the mermaids here allowed to visit the surface once a year and The Little Mermaid grew up hearing about the human world feeding her curiosity and sense of wonder more; in Disney's version of the Little Mermaid, Ariel was a freaken fangirl and rose to the surface against daddy's orders.
In Andersen's book she ends up brokenhearted and to sum up: she has to kill the prince while he's sleeping next to his wife who's not her to turn back into a mermaid. She can't do it and commits suicide turning into sea foam and Andersen added a whole "daughters of the air" thing which I find to be very unecessary. How did Disney adapted this? Ariel screws up and daddy comes to the rescue but Prince (Gen)Eric saves the day by stabbing Ursula (based on a drag queen named Divine) with a ship. At the end Ariel pouts and daddy puts her in sexy dress letting her stay in land when what she deserved was some ass-whopping after all the trouble she caused.
Ariel wants to be with the humans, sings part of your world, goes to Ursula to piss off daddy, endangers everything, is sorry for like two minutes and gets what she wants.

What I like in this movie: the colors, the animation, the songs, the villian, the sidekicks. What ruins it for me are the protagonists: I find Ariel to be way to innocent and dumb and prince Eric has such weak lines, you can predict everything we'll say. If it weren't for these two this one would be one of my Disney favourites.
I love Ursula's design and the way the moves, but just like Ariel she also had a nice voice; odly enough Ariel is the one that scares me in the 3rd reprise of Part of Your World. (someday I'll be part of your world? Stalcker)

Although my favourite characther in this movie is Ursula my favourite scene does not include her.

When I was a little girl I did not own this on Vhs or DVD and instead had it's sequel "The Little Mermiad II Return to the Sea".

If you're one of those parents who's super preocupied about morals you might prefer this one: same story minus the prince. Melody makes the same mistake mom made and is rescued but at least she didi it for herself. Also you only notice how the quality og the animation of this one is weaker her Ariel is on the screen. And you do get a decent song in it.

Disney loves this one (first movie again) because it got the whole 90's musical fairytale formula in place but to me is more like "meh" their salvations are the sidekicks, villian, animation and music. Remove these and i do not approve this one, you want your kids to be babysat by Auntie TV while you bitch to your best gal on the phone? It's a decent pick.

Overall grade from 1 to 5: 3
Now enjoy the villian song
See you next time.
